First Kings is the book of division. David’s son Solomon takes the throne. He begins well by asking God for wisdom, building the temple, and bringing expansion and wealth to the nation. However, his lust for women become his downfall and causes him to have a divided heart so that at the end of his life he is reduced to a man struggling to keep a kingdom together. After the death of Solomon the kingdom finally divides in two and is never the same as two nations are born: Israel and Judah.
