2 Thessalonians is a letter of clarification. In this letter Paul encourages some who were facing persecution and corrects some of the confusion about the second coming of Christ. The teaching about Christ’s return had caused some to become idle, just waiting for Christ’s return. So Paul exhorts them to remain steadfast in the face of persecution. He also tells them to get back to work and gives tells them about things that must take place before Christ returns and what it means to live in light of Christ’s return.
